YORK COUNTY (WAVY) - Search crews said they may have found human remains Saturday in York County. The FBI is now investigating whether or not those remains could be linked related to the Colonial Parkway Murders.
Crews spent the day searching for the remains of Christopher Newport University students Cassandra Hailey and Keith Call when cadaver dogs hit on something that may be human remains.
The family of the missing couple searched the Colonial National Park. Hailey and Call disappeared more than 20 years ago. All police found two decades ago, was their abounded car off the Colonial Parkway.
Three search dogs hit on an area near Bellfield Plantation -- an area in the middle of the woods, about a mile and a half off the Parkway.
Investigators say the dogs are trained to smell only human bones. The investigators are 99 percent sure the dogs found human remains. Officials say the dogs can sniff out anything up to 12 feet underground.
On Sunday, the FBI Evidence Response Team will start digging up the site.
Families say they are cautiously optimistic. The area has several historic graveyards near by. Families tell WAVY.com the findings could be anything.
WAVY.com will have a crew back on the scene Sunday. Stay with 10 On Your Side for any new developments.
