Consultants advise city to redesign Waterside

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A panel of five consultants hired by Norfolk to study the Waterside Festival Marketplace is advising city officials to redesign the existing structure instead of tearing it down and building a new structure.

The consultants are expected to present their study to City Council Tuesday afternoon.

Sources tell WAVY.com the study not only advises the city to use the existing structure, but they also recommend making improvements to Waterside Drive, bringing in national retail and restaurant chains and creating outdoor cafes behind Waterside.

The consultants also say Norfolk should make the marina at Waterside a full-service marina and bring it closer to the Waterside building.

For some time now, the city has been trying to figure out what to do with the once-popular venue.

Once City Council reviews the consultants' study, it will make a final decision on what to do with Waterside, but it is unclear when they will do that.

Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim said he does not know at this time when the construction to the existing building would being or where the money will come from. Mayor Fraim added that a town hall meeting may be held for residents to weigh in, as part of the process.
