NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - An elderly Newport News woman died Sunday afternoon when an SUV struck her car on Warwick Boulevard.

Newport News police spokesman Harold Eley said officers responded to the crash at  the intersection of Turlington Road about 3:20 p.m. They found a 71-year-old woman in a Chevrolet Malibu had been hit on the front passenger side by a Chrysler Pacifica as she tried to turn left onto Turlington Road.

Medics took the woman and the two people in the Chrysler to a local hospital. Eley said doctors treated and released the 35-year-old Newport News man and his 49-year-old female passenger from Virginia Beach.

Doctors pronounced 71-year-old Lois Norton of Indian Springs Drive dead at 5:01 p.m.

The Newport News Police Department's Crash Reconstruction Team continues to investigate by interviewing witnesses of the crash. Eley said charges are pending against the driver of the Chrysler..
