Fire officials say its not uncommon

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Portsmouth Fire Captain Paul Hoyle tells WAVY.com foul play does not appear to be a factor in a dumpster fire at a chemical plant on Columbus Avenue Monday night.

Hoyle said this is a recurring problem at the plant and the dumpster tends to self ignite or it may have something to do with the type of materials being thrown away.

Hoyle is not exactly sure what the ignition source is but, again, says it's not an unusual occurrence.

Arson has been ruled out as a cause of the fire.

The plant was not damaged in the fire.
