HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - Cardiac surgeon and talk show host Dr. Oz drew a crowd of grownup groupies Friday, anxious to meet and have their picture taken with him at the Hampton Roads Convention Center.

Dr. Oz was in Hampton for the Bon Secours Successful Aging Forum, sharing healthcare advice.

He suggests seniors get vitamins, Omega 3 oil and minerals from their diet, but is okay with taking vitamins and supplements. Make exercise a part of your life.

And foods Doctor Oz says you should avoid are, "White bread, white flour, white rice, soda. All these things are poisonous to us because they are empty calories."

Steve Zollos is the Administrative Director of Healthy Communities for Bon Secours Hampton Roads. He explained what seniors are up against.

"We are fighting some major battles with diabetes, being overweight, things like that, where we are just trying to project how folks can care for themselves and live to a ripe old age," he said.

Maurice Haynes is one of over a thousand people attending the forum. He liked the health tips he heard from Dr. Oz.

"What Dr. Oz is talking about," Haynes says, "eating and vitamins, the minerals, and the exercise, all of that is very helpful."

Leading physicians from Hampton Roads answered healthcare questions. And dozens of exhibitors passed along information about services, healthcare and aging well.

Steve Zollos added, "Bon Secours believes that educating the community and how to take care of themselves and foster their own good health is going to benefit everybody."
