VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - For nearly 25 years, an organization in Virginia Beach has provided shelter for people who might otherwise be homeless.
Friday, it was their turn to receive a helping hand. That assistance came from Dominion Virginia Power.
The Judeo-Christian Outreach Center provides the only real shelter for homeless adults in the resort city. Shelter residents have referred to the center as both a ministry and a blessing.
"They say blessings come when you're really not looking for them, but this when came and kind of smacked us in the back of the head," said Kirk Welch, executive director of the Judeo-Christian Outreach Center.
But as rock star John Mellencamp says, "sometimes it hurts so good."
"I'm pleased to present Kirk and the Judeo-Christian Outreach Center with $50,000," said Paul Koonce, CEO of Dominion Virginia Power.
Dominion Virginia Power Chief Executive Officer, Paul Koonce says the center gives more than it receives including the grant his company provided.
"There can be no greater benefit to society than keeping families together and helping families move forward and that's what happens here at the Judeo-Christian Center," Koonce said.
"I'm aware that this place is run by donations..." said Bernadette, a shelter resident.
Bernnadette is grateful for the grant, but even more thankful for something the power company's employees are giving: their time.
"Time is undescribable," she said. "We can have all the money in the world but if there's not somebody here to put it to use..."
Wardell Driver appreciates time. Fifty years with the company and still he has time for others.
"It's all about helping people," said Driver, a Dominion volunteer.
