HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - Dominion Virginia Power is helping people learn more about the individuals who were enslaved in Virginia.
The power company's foundation gave the Virginia Historical Society a $100,000 grant to fund Unknown No Longer: A Database of Virginia Slave Names. The free website allows users to track slavery information from millions of processed manuscripts.
Around 200 people showed up to a workshop held in Hampton Monday night to learn how to use the database.
For most, the only physical record of their existence may be a name in a register kept by a slave owner. Users can search the site with keywords, such as name, gender, location, occupation and plantation. Unknown No Longer also includes images of original source documents.
