NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - The dog days of summer are officially over. The Norfolk Fitness and Wellness Center kicked off the first weekend of fall with the third annual 'Dogs Gone Swimming' event.

Each year, the city closes its pools for the season and lets the dogs have the last swim. Owners pay a small admission fee and all of the proceeds benefit the Norfolk Animal Care Center.

Most dogs jumped at the chance to play fetch in the water.

"We thought he hated the water until like a month ago and finally coaxed him in on a vacation," said Jenny Britt of Norfolk. "This is the first year we brought him out here."

Swimming wasn't the only event. Dogs also performed tricks, walked in a parade and competed in a swim suit contest.
