NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Police say a pizza delivery driver was shot multiple times in the stomach and legs while making a delivery around 3 a.m. in the east end of Newport News.

Police were called to the intersection of 16th Street and Jebs Place for reports of a shooting. Police said Jamaal Summerville, 32, of Hampton, stepped out of his car to make a delivery at a residence, but never made it to the door.

Summerville was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. At last check Saturday night, he was still in critical condition.

Police say Summerville works at Chanello's Pizza on Kecoughtan Road in Hampton.

A former employee told WAVY.com Chanello's is the only late night food business in the area that will deliver to the east end of Newport News.

10 On Your Side called several similar businesses to see if that was true. All of the businesses had cut offs, meaning they won't deliver past certain streets. One pizza place had different cut off streets for day and night.

The closest delivery point 10 On Your Side could find was almost a mile away from the street Summerville was on when he was shot.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics ranked delivery drivers the 9th "Most Dangerous Job" in 2011. The list is a compilation of data collected in 2010.

Police are asking anyone who has information on the shooting to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
