NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - The December Shred-It Event was a huge success bringing in a total of 3,381 pounds of food in Virginia Beach and 1,261 pounds in Newport News.

Shred-It events bring in thousands of pounds of documents containing personal and sensitive information to be shredded, helping protect consumers' identities.

During the holiday season it's even more applicable because identity theft becomes easier for criminals and is on the rise across the nation.

Ten On Your Side Producers Kelly Welsh and Jamie Shackelford partnered with William E. Wood Realtors , Shred-It and area foodbanks to brave the elements and to help save your identity while collecting thousands of pounds of food, as well as monetary donations to benefit local area foodbanks.

Identity theft is on the rise and foodbank resources is on the downfall, Shackelford and Welsh helped collect an estimated 5,000 pounds of documents containing sensitive material to be shredded.

Shackelford was also able to collect 3,381 pounds of food, and $689.00 in monetary donations for the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia thanks to the Virginia Beach locals.

Welsh was able to collect an estimated 5,000 pounds of documents, 1,216 pounds of food and $221.00 in monetary donations for the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula with thanks to the Newport News locals.

Look for the next Ten On Your Side Shred-It event in February 2010.

Stay tuned both on-air and online for the final calculations from the December Shred-It event.
