VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia Beach police are investigating a fatal auto-pedestrian accident that happened early Thursday morning at the intersection of Arctic Avenue and 22nd Street, near the Oceanfront.

Police say the victim, identified as 34-year-old Travis Jay Wilson of Virginia Beach, was attempting to cross 22nd Street when he was struck by white, 2002 Acura traveling westbound on 22nd Street.  It happened around 2:10 a.m..

Investigators say Wilson was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police say witnesses tell them they saw Wilson run out into the street and they shouted for him to stop, but it was too late.

Police also say Wilson was not crossing the street in a controlled intersection and alcohol use may have been a factor in the crash.

Family members of the driver tell WAVY.com he is very shaken up.  Police say it's too early to tell if charges will be filed.

22nd and Arctic was closed for roughly four-and-a-half hours Thursday morning as Beach police investigated the scene.
