CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - The winter weather caused the U.S. Postal Service to shutdown service in five states, including Washington, D.C. The snow is also impacting many local businesses, making it difficult for them to make deliveries.
"The traffic between the Norfolk area and the D.C.-Baltimore area is significant," said Don Queeney with Hampton Roads Moving and Storage. Traffic in the area has been severely halted -- just getting to the area can be a nightmare, Queeney said.
Hampton Roads Moving and Storage is just one of many local companies that have been paralyzed by all the snow.
"Trying to make deliveries to residential areas in the area is close to impossible," Queeney said.
Inside the company's war room, the phones are constantly busy. The big board listing all the deliveries and pick-ups is changing by the hour.
"This particular truck was supposed to deliver in Columbia, Maryland Monday," Queeney said. "So this driver has been sitting for five days with no income, no way of generating any money and his truck is full."
Queeney said two of his deliveries were delayed due to the winter weather.
"We have a schedule to keep and it definitely impacts us...putting us behind," Queeney said.
Wednesday, the U.S. Postal Service suspended deliveries and collections in Washington, Maryland and most of Virginia. UPS and Fed-Ex are in the same boat and the delays are becoming costly.
"When we have weather like this it will back us up and cause the next person in line to have a possible service failure," Queeney added.
