NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - An 11-month-old child was found in distress in an extremely hot car after police say the child's mother ran into a Family Dollar store on Saturday.
Fire crews were called to the scene Saturday and upon arrival crews had to bust open the driver's side window to get to the child. Crews said it was extremely hot inside the car. The infant was transported to Riverside Hospital for treatment.
According to police the child's mother, 23-year-old Manal Musallam Musallam, exited the store as crews were breaking into the vehicle to get to the child. Musallam Musallam told officials she'd only been gone for two minutes. However, police say the case was called into dispatch at 12:44 and crews arrived at 12:55 p.m.
Witnesses told police the child was in the car for at least 30 minutes.
The baby has since been released from the hospital and returned to her father.
Child Protective Services has been notified.
Musallam Musallam has been charged with felony child neglect.
