Autopsy results pending in teen's death

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - The Medical Examiner's Office is working to determine what killed a 14-year-old boy who died after football practice Wednesday.

According to Leo Kosinski with the Chesapeake Police Department, medics responded to Oscar Smith High School shortly after 5 p.m. for a medical emergency involving a junior varsity football player.

Kosinski says the teen suffered a medical emergency during practice. After receiving first aid, he was transported to Chesapeake Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Kelly O'Sullivan with the Chesapeake Police Department identified the teen as JheVontae Davis, a sophomore.

"I went to middle school with him. We used to walk to 7-Eleven together. We had so much fun," Oscar Smith student Joan Boothe said. "He was understanding. I'm going to miss him. There are not a lot of people who are like [him]."

Facebook and Twitter tributes poured in overnight into Thursday morning. Many students began a social media campaign to persuade their peers to wear blue and the number 63, Davis' jersey number, on their hands Thursday.

"They wrote his number on his jersey on like their face and on their arm and their hand and stuff like that," Anthony Alexander told WAVY.com "As a matter of fact, people wore colors that he liked, people wore blue and red in honor of him [Thursday]."

Another Twitter tribute came from University of Virginia football coach Mike London, who tweeted, "Thoughts and prayers go out to the Oscar Smith Football Family from the UVA football family."

Former Oscar Smith football players Perry Jones, Phillip Sims and Tim Smith all play for Virginia.

Tom Cupitt, spokesman for Chesapeake Public Schools, told WAVY.com grief counselors were on hand Thursday for students and faculty and were being utilized.

Oscar Smith's JV football team was scheduled to play Deep Creek Thursday night at home. That game was canceled.

The Varsity team was still scheduled to play Friday.
