CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A school crossing guard hit by a truck in the 4100 block of Terry Road has died.
Police said 35-year-old Lovette T. Person was hit by a Toyota Tundra around 7:30 a.m. outside Western Branch Intermediate School.
Person was at the intersection of Brittany Way and Terry Drive directing traffic. She was wearing a reflecting vest.
Police said the woman driving the Toyota Tundra may have been distracted by the sun.
Person was transported to Norfolk General Hospital, where she later died, according to police spokeswoman Kelly O'Sullivan.
"She was very sweet and every morning I wanted to give her a hug," student Laynee Darden said.
Person had been a crossing guard for just under 18 months.
Person's son, Torron Person, Jr., said, "It hurt to know that was my Mom. It's nice to know people out her love her like that for real.
Torron was in class when he got the news about his mother and said he doesn't blame the driver of the truck.
"I can't really get mad at her. It was an accident. She didn't really mean to do do it. She happened to be there. She was doing her job.," Torron said.
The accident is currently under investigation.
Police said charges are pending.
