CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A cleaning crew working on a Chesapeake home found what appeared to be an explosive device, Wednesday afternoon.
A flotilla of FBI, ATF, bomb squad and firefighters made for an unnerving afternoon for residents along Prospect Drive, in the Great Bridge area of the city.
The homeowner hired a cleaning company and an employee stumbled upon what appeared to be a pipe bomb. The employee carried it outside and called 911.
Max Edwards watched the stream of fire trucks roll down the street.
"I saw them take the robot out the truck. It went down the street and up into the house," said Edwards.
Six homes nearby were evacuated. In the tedious hours that followed, another possible explosive device was found in the attic and was rendered safe. Carla Slack lives two doors down from the house. She stood in the rain watching and waiting.
"We're very surprised about this. The mom that lives there is the sweetest lady you could imagine. We don't know much about the man," said Slack.
Word spread to the nearby schools. Children who live nearby learned from administrators about a very adult problem close to home.
"We were all like scared because we didn't know what was going on. Finally, the one that took four of us home - my neighbor - she said there was a bomb," said 12-year-old Hunter Slack.
It could be a few days before a lab determines if the devices were actually explosives. Police said charges could be pending.
