CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - The pedestrian who died after being hit by a truck in the Deep Creek section of Chesapeake early Tuesday has been identified. Police said it appears he was lying in the roadway when he was struck.

Negal White, 51, of the 100 block of Butler Street in Portsmouth, was hit by the vehicle around 3:50 a.m. on George Washington Highway near Townhouse Lane, according to police.

Police said when officers arrived, they found a man unconscious and unresponsive lying in the roadway.

According to the driver of a Ford F-150, the pedestrian was already lying in the roadway when he hit the man.

The driver said he attempted to avoid the pedestrian in the road but was unsuccessful.

The driver remained on the scene and called 911. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors contributing to the accident.

After being closed for several hours while police conducted their investigation, police said all lanes of George Washington Highway have reopened.

Police said there are no charges pending at this time.
