CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A boater on a sinking sailboat called on the Coast Guard for help Wednesday afternoon.
The sailboat was near the Steel Bridge on the southern branch of the Elizabeth River in Chesapeake when it began taking on water, according to Chief Petty Officer Mike Hvozda.
Two Coast Guard response boats from Station Portsmouth responded to the scene around 2 p.m.
According to Hvozda, a rudder on the boat was broken which is why it was taking on water.
A Coast Guard helicopter, that was training in the area, lowered a rescue swimmer and helped the boater onto the tugboat Maverick, Lt. Jack Smith, with the Hampton Roads Coast Guard Sector, said.
A Virginia Marine Police boat escorted the sinking boat to a local marina.
