CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - Chesapeake firefighters found 67-year-old George Paio dead inside of his home on Indiana Avenue late Sunday evening.

According to Captain Scott Saunders with the Chesapeake Fire Department, firefighters believe a candle may have started the fire in the Bowers Hill area around 10 p.m.

Firefighters found no operating smoke detectors in the home.

Paio was a retired police officer and National Guardsman.

Captain Eddie Woods with the Chesapeake Police Department remembered Paio as one of the strictest he's ever known on traffic enforcement.

"There's probably a lot of folks in Chesapeake, especially the older folks, that may still remember the name Paio because he did write a lot of traffic tickets," Woods said.
