Man shot by bail bondsman speaks out

Chesapeake Police say a bail bondsman pulled the trigger when he was serving a warrant last week. The man who was shot is now speaking out.

"When [the bondsman] put [the gun] to my gut, I turned a little and that's what caused it to angle and not go straight in," said Chesapeake resident Jason Turner.

Turner says last Wednesday, he and his friends had just pulled into his Stalham Road driveway home when the bail bondsman approached Turner.

"The next thing you know, a white little vehicle pulls up right in front of my house, a guy jumps out, gun drawn, just screaming, 'Get on the ground!'" Turner said.

Turner says all he saw was the end of a gun barrel so he ran.

"I stopped at the fence, the guy caught up to me and he's grabbing on me," Turner described. "He put his gun back in his holster. He grabbed on me. I didn't get on the ground. I backed away from the man. He pulled back out his pistol, pulled me towards him and shot me."

Turner was rushed to the hospital for surgery. He says he recognized the bail bondsman from the A. Ace Bail Bond Company right before he was shot and he was trying to give himself up. The bondsman, Edmond F. Langevin, told police Turner was giving him a struggle.

Turner told WAVY.com he did not know he was wanted. WAVY.com learned Turner was wanted for violating his probation and failing a drug test. The warrant was issued nine days before the incident.

According to court records, Turner's previous charges have all been non-violent offenses, including third degree larceny and grand larceny. Turner told WAVY.com he is not turning himself in because he is injured.

"I'm not in the health position to go and turn myself," Turner said. "I'm not physically able to go in jail."

Turner plans to nurse the wounds at home, knowing it could cost him more jail time.

WAVY.com asked the hospital Turner was treated in why police were not notified, but hospital officials say they only sometimes let police know when patients are released as a courtesy. There is no law mandating the hospital has to let police know if a suspect is released.

Turner maintains that police should charge Langevin.

"I just want to see justice," Turner said. "He needs the proper punishment to him. Just like I have to go pay my debt to society, he needs to pay his."

10 On Your Side stopped by Langevin's Virginia Beach home, but all he had to say was, "No comment."

Turner says he thinks he will face the penalties for the outstanding warrant when he goes to court later this month.

Police tell WAVY.com they are still investigating the shooting and so far no charges have been filed.
