Hampton Roads avoids nationwide drought

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - Federal forecasters say more than 50 percent of the country is experiencing a severe drought which could drive up food prices.

More than 1,000 counties in 26 states have been declared disaster areas.

Local farmer Frank Spence says the drought has hurt him this year, but the increased rainfall in Hampton Roads could be more hurtful to crops than drought.

"If you have something that is hurt by a drought, you get a little bit of water, it will come out some," Spence said.
