CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - The Navy announced it will close the runway at Fentress Field in Chesapeake a month earlier than originally planned.
The runway will close to carrier landing practice for about nine months starting December 5. It was originally set to close in January.
The closure will allow the Navy time it needs to repair pavement and lighting at Fentress. Jets that use Fentress will practice landings more frequently at Naval Air Station Ocecana.
The Navy added it will still try to stop nighttime landing practices at 10 p.m., but there will be times where it may extend to midnight.
