Fire destroys Chesapeake trailer

Four adults displaced

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - Four adults were displaced after a fire destroyed their mobile home in the 1400 block of Deep Creek Boulevard Tuesday morning.

WAVY.com spoke with the owners who are a bit shaken, but thankful no one was in the trailer when the fire broke out. They say there could have been someone in the trailer, but just minutes before the fire began, their daughter-in-law left to walk their dogs in a nearby park.

The homeowners and their son were at work when the fire broke out and it didn't take long for fire to destroy the double-wide trailer in the Geneva mobile home park.

One neighbor told WAVY.com he realized the trailer next door was on fire around 8:00 Tuesday morning, so he grabbed a shovel, ran to the burning trailer and broke in a window.

He says he knew no one was home, but he was afraid the family's dogs were still inside. He quickly realized the dogs were not there and in those few short moments he says the fire spread from the back end of the trailer to the middle.

Firefighters got to the scene shortly after, but by that time flames poured out of every side of the home. There's still no word on what caused the fire, but the family tells WAVY.com they lost everything.

"All the decorations, furniture, everything is gone. All we've got is our clothes., but we have each other. That's it. That's all that matters. Material things can be replaced," say Cindy and Riley Box.

The Boxs say they do have insurance and their agent is at the scene.

An investigation into what sparked the fire is underway.

Meanwhile, Riley says this isn't the first time he lost a home to fire. He says when he was a child, he and his sister escaped their burning home.

Capt. Mike Thibeault of the Chesapeake Fire Department said there was "catastrophic damage" to the trailer.
