CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - Construction of the Jordan Bridge was briefly halted on June 21 after an accident resulted in six minor injuries. Officials say the opening of the bridge could be delayed.

Spencer Claycomb was working just a few feet away from the Jordan Bridge when he heard a booming sound.

"A large piece of concrete was dropping and all the workers on the large frame were jumping off and hanging by their harnesses and they were being pulled to the top," Claycomb said. "It looked like the main truss just twisted and the whole bridge section just dropped. It landed so hard all the pictures in our facility dropped off the wall."

Claycomb said 911 was called immediately.

"Luckily no one got hurt [and] no one [was]  taken away in an ambulance," Claycomb said.

Kevin Crum, general manager of the Jordan Bridge, said injuries were minor.

"We only had six minor injuries which I will define as a sprained ankle to one employee, and some bruises and some scrapes," Crum said. "One of our pre-fabricated concrete segments fell from the bridge during the installation process. It landed on the railroad tracks adjacent to the facility."

An investigation is underway by state officials into the accident.
