CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A Chesapeake middle school teacher is now in the running for Virginia's Teacher of the Year award.
Kathy Galford, a sixth-grade English teacher at Greenbrier Middle School, was surprised to learn on Thursday that she was selected as the regional teacher of the year.
A panel, consisting of teachers, representatives from professional and educational associations, businesses and the 2012 Virginia Teacher of the Year, reviewed the candidate portfolios and letters of recommendation to select this year's regional award recipients.
The panel will interview Ms. Galford and the seven other regional winners to select the 2013 Virginia Teacher of the Year. Their decision will be announced during an awards ceremony October 12 in Richmond.
Last year's Teacher of the Year, Margaret A. "Meg" Smith, is from Lynchburg.
