VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Three Virginia Beach families didn't know when they said
good-bye to their teenage sons Friday morning it would be their
last. The teenagers died in a crash on Salem Road as they drove
home from school just before two Friday afternoon.
Investigators say 18-year-old Matthew Kirkbride and his two
17-year-old passengers, Joseph Jenkins and Adam Sherman, died at
the scene.
"This is the worst," said Dennis Chandler. "If three people
were killed, this is the worst by far."
The Chandler family has lived along the winding two lane
section of Salem Road for 40 years. In that time they've seen their
share of crashes.
"I don't know how many accidents end up in our front yard
because of that curve and the young people just flying around that
curve," added Chandler.
Friday afternoon it happened again.
Police say three teens left the Virginia Beach Technical and
Career Education Center, headed home in the pounding rain. School
let out at 1:50. Just around the corner, and only minutes later,
tragedy struck.
"I was upstairs when I heard this big explosion and I knew
what it was," said Chandler.
Chandler ran outside and found twisted and tangled metal; two
vehicles smashed together.
"The man driving the van fell out of the van and he was
conscious," said Chandler.
Emergency crews rushed him to a hospital where we're told he
should be okay. Police say all three teens died and speed is to
blame.
"It appears that the Volkswagen came into the curve to fast,
lost control, went sideways and came into the path of the oncoming
van," said Virginia Beach Police Officer Adam Bernstein.
Police tells us the teens go to Green Run High and switch to
the vo-tech school in the afternoon.
Investigators say the teens were all wearing their
seatbelts.
