Said he was shooting family members

ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - An unidentified caller made a prank emergency call to the Isle of Wight County 911 center Sunday. The caller told dispatchers that he was shooting family members, police said Tuesday.

An Isle of Wight tactical team, as well as the Carrolton Volunter Fire Department responded to the call, which they eventually determined to be a prank. Police said the caller sounded "intoxicated and despondent."

Police say it's not illegal to mask or alter your caller ID, as this caller had done, but it is illegal to give law enforcement officials a false report of a crime. It's also illegal to maliciously advise the death of a third party over the phone.

Police believe the suspect lives in the area because he gave detailed descriptions of several areas during the call.

If you have any information, you're asked to call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
