ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - Deputies say a man whose body was found next to a burning vehicle in Isle of Wight County had been staying with an unknown woman in Newport News.
According to Kristin Wilda with Isle of Wight County, investigators received information Torrey Lamont Anderson was staying with the woman in the days preceding his death. Deputies are urging anyone with information to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
Deputies were dispatched to the 13000 block of Nike Park Road in the Carrollton area for a report of a vehicle fire around 3:45 a.m. Tuesday. Capt. Rick Gaddis with the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office told WAVY.com the body of a burned male victim was found next to the vehicle.
According to Gaddis, a motorist passing by saw the vehicle, parked on a gravel road near a woodline, on fire.
The vehicle was pulled off into a field near the intersection of Reynolds Drive, Wilda added. The victim's body was said to be badly burned and was taken to the Medical Examiner's Office for identification.
The victim was later identified as Anderson, 21, of Raleigh, N.C. The Medical Examiner's Office determined Anderson died of a gunshot wound.
There is no suspect information at this time.
Gaddis said the location of the vehicle and the body is not associated with Nike Park, which is close by.
Arson investigators with the Virginia State Police are assisting with the investigation.
