NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - As it has for the last 27 years, a special event celebrating African American culture is coming to Norfolk this weekend--the annual Afr'Am Festival.
"It means a lot to be able to out here and see the different things that our culture has to offer," said Felicia Thompson.
"The fest has natural products and ethnic issues," said Shannan Morris. "It deals with everything that African Americans embody and we need that."
This year's Afr'Am Fest is no different. The event is lined with tent after tent full of culture.
"For the most part, this is very nice," added Thompson. "I like how they have everything set up."
Traditionally, the festival is always on Memorial Day. Last year, it had to be moved because of construction to Town Point Park. This year the city decided to hold it this weekend, but festival goers don't seem to mind.
"I was going to make my way here regardless just, because this is the type of cultural recharge that I need every year," added Morris.
But be warned, getting to the festival could be a challenge--Waterside Drive is shut down all weekend, and parking is tight.
"It wasn't as bad as I thought," Thompson said. "We got here and we got into a parking space not far away."
