HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - Newport News Waterworks crews worked throughout the night to repair a water main break that forced officials to close a portion of Big Bethel Road in Hampton on Wednesday afternoon.
On Thursday, crews will be out repairing the large sinkhole caused by the break.
Larry Willis who lives at the intersection of Roberta Drive and Big Bethel Road told WAVY.com, "When I heard the rushing water I knew it wasn't raining." Willis said when he went outside muddy water was flooding his front yard and the streets.
Dan Kuhns with Newport News Waterworks said the break impacted about two dozen customers. Their water service has since been restored.
According to Kuhns, a 12-inch line broke underground at Big Bethel. That line serves families along the road.
A 30-inch transmission line also had a leak, Kuhns said.
Both lines were repaired last Wednesday night.
Detours are expected to remain in place on Big Bethel between Todds Lane and Mercury Boulevard while officials begin to repair the roadway.
According to authorities, the asphalt work will be done in two stages: the base will be laid Thursday; the surface will be laid Friday.
