Wakefield wakes up to inches of snow

WAKEFIELD, Va. (WAVY) - Wakefield residents woke up to a white blanket of snow on roads, cars and grassy areas.

"I had to scrape the windshield, about three or four inches of snow was on the windshield," said Thurman Shell, Jr., a driver who stopped for some gas.

Other drivers say they expected to have to clean their cars off Friday morning.

"It was about what I expected, what I heard on the news last night," said Ben Johnson, of Waverly. "I watched the weather. I just wasn't sure what the roads would be like."

On Route 460, the big rigs took it a little slower than usual. But for the most part, roads were damp, not dangerous. Sussex County dispatchers say there were no accidents during the morning commute.

"I didn't see or feel any slick spots or feel anything under the car," said Johnson. "I heard several tractor trailers go by my place, so i think it's alright."

As dark gave way to daylight, the temperatures dropped slightly, freezing the top layers of standing water.

"It's been raining for the last week, so there's a lot of water!" said one woman, with a makeshift pond in her driveway.

Sussex County Public Schools canceled classes Friday, so students and parents would not have to make the trip.

One mother told WAVY.com she was taking her young children to work, because they didn't have school.

By noon, the sun decided to show its face, for the first time in days. Its effects were obvious as water flowed into sewer drains. Mother Nature melted away the memories of the only snow of 2013.
