W&M alum trains for London Olympics

W&M alum has eyes on representing Team USA

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) - There are exactly 100 days until the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. As the excitement builds across the pond, there's also excitement building here in Hampton Roads.

For the first time in his professional running career, Ed Moran is injury free and in his final months of training before the Olympic trials.

"Now I'm on that upswing about two months earlier, and now I'm right where I want to be and need to be and can apply it to making the Olympic team," Moran said

For the last eight years, Moran has had setback after setback. He had so many injuries when he ran in college, the NCAA granted him a sixth year of eligibility.

"...from seven different surgeries to soft tissues to a variety of different injuries that have forced me to take time off," Moran explained.

But for the last 18 months, nothing has slowed him down.

"I'll run seven days a week. When everything is perfectly fine, I'll probably double three days a week, and then I'll do a longer run between 20 and 25 miles," said Moran.

That adds up to anywhere from 100 to 150 miles a week in Williamsburg.

His sponsorship is enough to pay the bills at home.

"It's been great. I always feared that it would drive me nuts, but now it allows me to take care of the small details that I've been putting by the wayside the last few years," said Moran.

Whatever he's doing on the track is working. Moran ran the New York City Marathon and clocked the second fastest American time, finishing in the top 10.

Now, Moran has two more months to make sure his speed is right where it needs to be to represent Team USA.

"The big one of course is the Olympic trials, which are at the end of June, where they'll pick the U.S. Olympic team," Moran added.

The U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials are in Eugene, Oregon on June 21. Moran must place in the top three to qualify.
