HAMPTON, Va. - The city of Hampton rang in the New Year with a New Year's Eve bash and birthday party. The city turned 400 years old.
Agela Tugwell, a former peninsula native came all the way from Texas to hear favorite local band, Slapwater , perform at the celebration.
"Oldies but goodies," said Tugwell.
The idea of celebrating with family was enough to make the Klewer and Land families brave the elements.
"I think it's really fun because you get to stay up late and have fun and party," said 12-year-old Makalah Klewer.
Imagine a birthday celebration 3 years in the making. Special Events Coordinator Erin Black says planning for this party began in 2007.
"It's one of the most unique events on the peninsula. How many times does the city turn 400," said Black.
Fireworks were scheduled for midnight as was the ringing of St. John's church bell a total of 400 times.
Celebration events continue all the way through December of 2010.
