VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. - The Virginia Beach Fire Department would like to warn people about the most common dangers associated with the holidays.

December, January, and February are full of Holiday celebrations and, unfortunatly, increased home and cooking fires.

There are four big concerns for the season:

CHRISTMAS TREE SAFETY

  • Keep heat sources away from trees (candles, stoves, spaceheaters)
  • Nerver use real candles on your tree
  • Turn off Christmas lights when sleeping or leaving your home
  • Use only UL approved lights and inspect cords and plugs for wear. Don't use damaged lights.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY

  • Inspect lights and light strands for damaged wiring or worn spots and throw them out.

CANDLE SAFETY

  • Put candles out when leaving home or going to sleep.
  • Keep candles, matches, and lighters away from children and don't leave children unattended with lit candles.
  • Keep candles clear of greenery and other flammable decorations.

COOKING

  • Don not leave cooking food unattended
  • Cover grease fires with a lid and do not attempt to carry a burning pot to the outside. Grease could splatter and spread fire as you travel.

The Virginia Beach Fire Department wants you to have a safe and Happy Holidays so be aware of the danger and look out for yourself and your family.
