VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Students at Three Oaks Elementary in Virginia Beach spent Monday night re-creating the Underground Railroad inside their school.

As part of Black History Month, the students set up their gymnasium and nearby areas as a virtual Underground Railroad.

Monday night, the lights were dimmed so the students could get the real feel for the project, moving from location to location. The students' parents also got to experience the event, with the children acting as "conductor."

For the event, the students learned special songs and made quilts out of construction paper and poster boards. The library also had books available and centers set up in the hallways to allow everyone in attendance to learn even more.

The Underground Railroad, a network of safe house, helped thousands of slaves escape the South before the Civil War.
