RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia will open select DMV customer service centers on Sunday and Labor Day in order to help process the backlog in license applications resulting from last week's computer issues.

The DMV sent letters out requesting 4,240 people who applied for driver's licenses and ID cards on Wednesday, August 25 to return for a new photograph. August 25 was the day the statewide IT outage began.

Extended hours will also be in place the weekend of September 11 and 12.

The announcement by Governor Bob McDonnell follows an earlier order extending hours at all DMV offices on Friday and Saturday.

"It is imperative that we take every step necessary to assist Virginians inconvenienced by the recent computer issues that impacted 13% of the Commonwealth's file servers," said Gov. McDonnell. "In order to assist Virginians who need to return to the DMV for a license I have ordered select customer service centers to open this Sunday, as well as on Labor Day. In addition, our centers will also have extended hours the following weekend. We have also acted administratively to help Virginians who have been unable to renew their licenses over the past week by extending existing licenses for an additional 20 days. State and local law enforcement agencies have been notified of this extension. Like all Virginians, I am displeased by the recent computer troubles that have led to this situation. I have directed all impacted state agencies to take all actions necessary to return to normal operating conditions and to ensure that their citizen clients receive the service and assistance they deserve."

Details of the additional Labor Day weekend DMV hours are:

Friday, September 3 - All locations open until 6:00 p.m.
Saturday, September 4 - All locations open 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Chesapeake, Hampton, and Virginia Beach-Buckner locations will remain open from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Sunday, September 5 - Chesapeake, Hampton, and Virginia Beach-Buckner locations open 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Monday, September 6 - Chesapeake, Hampton, and Virginia Beach-Buckner locations open 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
