NORFOLK, Va. - The sound of progress can be heard in downtown Norfolk as drill noise resonates throughout parking garages.
"We're seeing the beginning work for the installation of the cameras. They're running the conduit for the wiring and then the cameras will be installed," says city spokesman Bob Batcher.
It's work, Batcher says, took about two years to finalize.
"One of the things that's happened throughout that time is technology has changed so we also wanted to make sure we have the best technology possible and it seems to have happened."
It happened as parking garages in Norfolk seem troubled at times. In March, police investigated a homicide in the Waterside Parking Garage and then another homicide in the Freemason Parking Garage in November.
Suspects were captured quickly and now with word of the camera installation underway, residents are thrilled.
"It'll definitely make me feel safer because as we know, with a camera, it deters criminals and also I think there's just an overall sense of security when there's something bigger than ourselves to help watch what we're doing," says Ted Raspiller, who parked in the Freemason Garage.
The Freemason parking garage isn't the only one getting "eyes" installed. You can expect the same security measures at the Waterside and Main Street garages.
"We want to make sure that residents have a confidence level in their security," says Batcher.
Even with camera installation in the early stages, that confidence can already be seen.
"I'll probably come downtown more. I'll do that more now to take advantage of the events in the evening, absolutely. I think it's a great thing," says Raspiller.
Batcher says the camera installation should take a few months to complete. He says the cameras are being strategically placed so there's a vantage point throughout the entire garage.
