SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) - Contractors are tearing down parts of Suffolk's Obici House, the subject of a long-running debate between city officials and preservationists.
The 1924 house along the Nansemond River once belonged to Planters Peanuts founder Amedeo Obici and is now owned by the city.
Contractors on Monday said they were removing the front and back porches and the kitchen and demolishing the carriage house. Deputy City Manager Patrick Roberts says the city was removing structural damage before turning the home over to Ronnie Rountree, operator of the adjacent Sleepy Hole Golf Course , for a future clubhouse.
Members of Citizens for the Preservation of Obici said they were unaware any work had begun and were concerned about the demolition.
