McCain and Allen campaign together

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - The Obama Administration's foreign policy was under attack Thursday in Newport News. Republican candidate for Senate George Allen and Arizona Senator John McCain visited defense contractor Bosh Global Services.

"Four years ago, I told you we would end the war in Iraq and we did," President Obama told a Virginia Beach crowd Thursday, touting his record on defense. "I said we would wind down the war in Afghanistan and we are."

McCain says the Obama Administration has failed and has a weak foreign policy record.

"We are failing in Afghanistan because we keep telling the enemy we are leaving," McCain said. "Do you ever hear him saying anything about succeeding? No. He talks about withdrawing.

The president said to a crowd of 7,000 Thursday, "Al Qaeda is on the path of defeat, and Bin Laden is dead."

McCain faults the Obama Administration for misreading the Al Qaeda-backed attack that killed embassy workers in Benghazi, Libya.

"We have sacrificed a lot of blood and treasure because the president does not know what the word 'victory' means and that should be an issue in this campaign," McCain said.

The intelligence community now says, as McCain first thought, that the attack in Libya was not spontaneous as the United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice first reported.

"It was astounding to hear that ... you don't bring rocket propelled grenades to a spontaneous demonstration," McCain said.

The President also said, "I know we still face serious threats as we saw with the tragic death of our Ambassador and three others. That's why as long as I am Commander-in-Chief we will sustain the strongest military the world has ever known."

Sen. McCain does not agree and neither does Republican Senate Candidate George Allen who accused the president of playing games with the military.

"I just think it is so wrong to play these political games that we are risking the safety of our men and women," Allen said referring to the president saying the following quote in July: "What we have said is if Republicans are willing to ask the wealthy to pay a little bit more then we don't have to worry about these Draconian defense cuts."

McCain responded, "It is outrageous that the president would rather have a campaign issue attacking us for a tax break for the rich than for preventing what would be devastating for our national security."

For his part McCain supported the Budget Control Act of 2011 that put possible defense cuts in motion.

"I voted for it. Guilty. Now it is there, obviously we've been making ever effort to reach out to try and get it reversed. It was a bad vote," McCain said.
