Norfolk's 2nd Precinct gets new home

NORFOLK, Va. - Construction is underway on a new $20 million Norfolk Police precinct. The building will house Norfolk's 2nd precinct, which covers the Little Creek and Ocean View areas.

The groundbreaking proved symbolic. "In just a few moments we will turn shovels of earth," Norfolk Mayor Paul Frame said to the crowd.

"Five years we've been waiting," said Norfolk resident Otis Powell. "They were promising it would come back. Today is the day."

The groundbreaking was about building more security for a community. "It will make us feel a lot safer knowing that they are closer," added Norfolk resident Keith Fentress.

Almost five years ago, crews tore down Norfolk's 2nd precinct to make way for a Wal-Mart on Little Creek Road.

"It was very convenient for us as neighbors throughout the community," added Powell.

The convenience, along with the officers, moved to the training center on Military Highway. They were miles away and no longer in the heart of their coverage area. Monday, the city fulfilled a promise that the officers would come back.

"I think it's more important for the residents out here to know that the police department will be back out here serving this part of the city again," said Norfolk Police Chief Bruce Marquis.

The new precinct will be in the middle of the 40 neighborhoods it will serve.

"If we can get the police officers out from here, it will cut shorter (the time) getting to the scene instead of where they are now," added Fentress.

Then new 2nd precinct should be open in the spring of 2011.
