Larceny reported at Chesapeake church

Pastor wants to know if economy is to blame

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A utility trailer and a chainsaw were among the items stolen from a Chesapeake church last weekend, and its pastor tells WAVY.com he thinks a struggling economy could be to blame.

Police say the items were stolen some time between 10 p.m. Aug. 19 and 6:30 a.m. Aug. 20 at Behel Baptist Church, off Elbow Road. Pastor Reggie Hester says a 6-foot by 10-foot trailer was stolen. He says it was used to haul luggage on trips for church members. Additionally the suspects opened four shipping containers, and a chainsaw was stolen.

"The most expensive item was actually a chain saw that really wasn't property of the church but actually belonged to one of our members who was just keeping it up here," Hester said. "That comes in handy from time to time when you're trying to keep the brush down."

Also missing were holiday decorations and props used for church plays.

"If this was done by somebody because they're in a desperate situation, then I would have liked the opportunity to help than just have them come out and take things," Hester said.

The value of the stolen items is estimated between $2,500 and $3,000.
