NORFOLK, Va. (AP/WAVY) - A federal jury began deliberations Wednesday in the retrial of two former Blackwater contractors charged with murder in the deaths of two unarmed Afghan civilians.
Justin H. Cannon of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Christopher Drotleff of Virginia Beach face federal murder, assault and weapons charges that could send them to prison for life. Prosecutors contend the men shot at a vehicle in Kabul out of frustration and anger. Defense attorneys maintain they shot in self defense. Neither man testified in court.
Their first trial ended in September with a hung jury.
Judge Robert Doumar read the jury their instructions for deliberations on Wednesday morning.
Jurors began deliberating around 11:30 a.m. and did not break for lunch. At one point, they asked to take another look at the vehicle Drotleff and Cannon shot at. They also asked for clarification around the word "unlawful" as it relates to a manslaughter charge.
The jury will continue their deliberations on Thursday.
