FBI going to the lab in Parkway Murders

NORFOLK, Va - The FBI spoke with WAVY.com concerning the Colonial Parkway Murders. Investigators believe there have been at least eight young victims since 1986. Two of them have never been found, and neither has the killer.

WAVY.com has learned the FBI is taking evidence to its crime lab in Quantico, VA next week. The FBI claims the cases have always been open, never been closed, and the fact is the agency has not found the evidence needed to solve the crimes.

FBI Community Outreach Specialist Vanessa Torres, "We want to make sure the evidence is taken in and new forensic technology is applied to it. Maybe there is something that we weren't able to use in the past."

The FBI also says local law enforcement agencies will be contacted for a "meeting of the minds discussion" although no date has been set up. "One of the reasons for the meeting is to determine whether there are new leads. We also want to uncover any leads from other agencies. We expect the meetings to take place within weeks," Torres says.

Torres also says the FBI has not concluded the crimes are the work of a serial killer as determined by State investigators years ago, "For many years there has been speculation they are linked crimes, but the FBI does not have conclusive evidence of that."

Cassandra Hailey and Keith Call disappeared in April 1988. Cassandra's mother, Joanne Hailey shortly after the disappearance said with tears in her eyes, "At night it's really tough. Knowing she is not in the next room, asleep. It's been so long after 21 years what can you find that you didn't find before?"

The FBI also understands the frustration family members may have after all these years.  "Our agents are in touch with families when new information is received," Torres says.

At the end of the day, for the families, it's all about turning evidence into answers. After all these years of pain, that's all they want.
