ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WAVY) - The former Elizabeth City State University student who brought an AK-47 to campus in Nov. 2011 was sentenced to 60 days in jail.

Rashaad Gardner pleaded guilty to going armed to the terror of the people. A second charge, assault by point a gun, was dropped.

Gardner was also charged with felony gun on education property, but pleaded to a lesser charge of misdemeanor weapon on educational property.

At least one officer shot Gardner in the leg after he pointed an AK-47 at police. ECSU police say the Romanian-made AK-47 is legal to own in North Carolina.

A group of students running from Gardner originally brought his presence to the attention of campus police. Police say they asked Gardner to drop the gun repeatedly but he refused. Gardner ran into a wooded area after being hit by at least one bullet.

Elizabeth City police brought K-9 units to campus to assist in the search and locate Gardner. The campus was on lock down for two hours during the confrontation and the search.

Gardner graduated from the school in the fall of 2010.
