PORTSMOUTH, Va. - U.S. Congresswoman Thelma Drake conceded Thursday night to her challenger, Democrat Glenn Nye.  Drake was trying to hold on to her 2nd District seat.

Nye finished election night with about 8,000 more votes than Drake, but the Congresswoman wanted to wait for Virginia Beach's absentee ballots to be counted.

Election workers spent the last two days counting more than 27-thousand absentee ballots.  Around 10 o'clock Thursday night they announced they were done.

An unofficial count has Nye at 13,716 absentee votes and Drake at 9,824.

Election officials say they're still waiting on the results of 600 ballots, which couldn't be counted because of a machine malfunction.

Thursday night Drake called Nye and congratulated him on his victory.

Nye tells WAVY.com he hopes to work with Drake in the future.
