CHESAPEAKE, Va. - A Chesapeake Building Inspector was injured Wednesday when police say he was hit by a projectile, believed to be from a firearm, while sitting in his city vehicle.

Police, however, say they do not believe the city employee was an intended target.

According to officials, police responded to a 'shots fired' call in the 2900 block of Scotia Drive around 11:50 a.m.

When officers arrived, they found the Building Inspector suffering from a minor wound to his left arm.

The inspector indicated he had parked his vehicle in front of a home, with the driver's side window down facing the home, when he was hit.

Police believe the projectile was discharged from inside the home that the inspector was parked in front of.

The Chesapeake Police SWAT unit was activated, entered the home and determined it was clear of any individuals.

While police say it is unclear what type of projectile was discharged from inside the home, they do indicate that it appears it was a type of firearm.

The homeowner is being interviewed and the case is actively being investigated.

The inspector's injury was treated on scene by medics.
