YORK COUNTY, Va - Twenty-two years ago Friday night, two families would see two of their children for the last time. Twenty-two years ago Saturday, they would disappear without a trace.
On April 10, 1988, Cassandra Hailey and Keith Call disappeared from the Colonial Parkway while on their first date. The decades-old mystery continues tonight.
Twenty-two years have passed, but it was like yesterday, "As I come around the corner, coming down the parkway, I see my brother's car. My stomach turns into knots, and I had a felling of doom," said Joyce Call.
In remembrance of the 22 years, there will be a fundraiser Sunday at Pops Drive-In. "We are doing this for awareness. We are trying to raise funds for any additional rewards, investigative fees, and legal fees," Call says.
Keith Call was on his first date with Cassandra Hailey. They disappeared together, Keith's red car left behind, and their families left behind. "Every anniversary is a bitter sweet celebration," said Joanne Hailey.
The anniversary she speaks about is her wedding anniversary. Today is Joanne Hailey's 50th wedding anniversary.
Twenty-two years ago on her wedding anniversary would be the last time Joanne would see Cassandra. Cassandra is 22 years gone, but never far away.
"Everything we do we remember her. Something pops in your head and you remember Sandy. We say 'Sandy did this and Sandy did that.' She's always there," says Joanne.
Joanne Hailey is torn by the unknown--what happened 22 years ago?
"I want God to tell me what happened. I want him to give me peace of mind in my head. That's what I want from God," Hailey said.
When the Calls gather at Pops Sunday it will be another family gathering where Keith is missing. Ironically, this one because Keith is missing. "Everytime we have a family gathering we think of him. He's missed growing up with his family," Joyce said.
The FBI tells WAVY.com it continues investigating the Colonial Parkway Murders. The DNA Analysis Unit has all the evidence to be retested using updated DNA tests. The unit will begin processing the evidence within weeks.
So far the disappearance of Cassandra Hailey and Keith Call remains unsolved. Also unsolved the murders of Rebecca Ann Dowski and Cathleen Thomas, who were found killed on the Parkway on October 12, 1986.
September, 1987 David Knobling and Robin Edwards were found dead from gunshot on the shore of the James River. In October 1989 the bodies of Anna-Maria Phelps and Daniel Lauer were found dead along a New Kent County logging road.
The Colonial Parkway Murder Victims Benefit and Fundraiser is Sunday at Pop's Drive-In on Highway 17 in Grafton in York County from 12 to 5 p.m., and the Cross Roads Band will perform.
