PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Every year, 10 On Your Side and Langley Federal Credit Union recognize 10 people who care deeply about their communities.

They put neighbors first in what they do and they do it under a cloak of modesty.

Bill Cox is a lung cancer survivor who volunteers with LEE'S FRIENDS . Cox gives a thousand hours a year to help other's win the same battle he did.

Dr. William Gough retired from medicine after 30 years to volunteer with various local clinics that help seniors.

For honoree Dierdre Love, younger citizens have always touched a special place in her heart. She is the founder of Teens With a Purpose

"I really want young people to learn how to take better care of themselves and lead themselves safer and better life choices," Love said.

The tireless efforts of Kimberly Urch rubbed off on others in the fight against breast cancer. Over six years, she raised more than $170, 000 for the cause.

Bill Hayden helps young people discover the joys of math and science through his organization, STARBASE .

"And I'm afraid that kids are afraid of math and science and I hope to dispel that concern," Hayden said at Thursday's ceremony.

Catherine Stayton does many little things, but they add up especially for victims of domestic violence.

Stayton said, "So I want to show them that there's someone out here that truly cares and wants to see them despite their circumstance still be able to thrive in life."

Kerry Wallace spent a half century as a volunteer firefighter in Wachapreague. He's also in the volunteer firefighter hall of fame.

Christine Gilchrist works tirelessly for suicide prevention. She leads thousands of people "out of the darkness" on annual walks, that rank number one out of more than 260 in the country.

Carl and Lillie Faison opened their hearts and their home by forming the Boykins Neighborhood Outreach Center for underprivileged kids.

Rick Williams knows Christmas is coming and that's why he and a volunteer staff founded Catchin' for Kids , one of the largest contributors to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots .

Selfless service embodied by these special citizens is why they are this year's 10 Who Care.
