HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) - One person was killed, one person suffered life-threatening injuries and four others suffered major injuries after a car driving the wrong way on I-64 hit another car head-on.

The crash happened just before 3 a.m. Sunday on I-64 westbound in Hampton near the Newport News city line.

Police say that a car with five people in it was traveling westbound on I-64 when a car going the wrong way struck it head-on.

One female passenger was killed and another sustained life-threatening injuries according to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya. Three others in the car suffered major but non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the car that was going the wrong way also suffered major injuries but they were not considered life-threatening, according to Anaya.

Police have not been able to determine at this point whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation.
