HAMPTON, Va. - The man accused of shooting two people on the campus of Hampton University Sunday appeared in Hampton General District Court via Video conference Thursday morning.

Odane Maye, 18, now has a preliminary hearing set for June 24.

Wearing no handcuffs or leg restraints, Maye sat down in a classroom style chair, appearing via video from the Hampton City Jail. Maye was wearing a navy blue hospital-type gown, barefoot, and a white medical bandage over his right cheek.

The judge read the list of charges to Maye, which include two counts of Aggravated Malicious Wounding, two counts of using a Firearm During a Felony, one count of Breaking and Entering While Armed, one count of Possessing a Firearm on School Grounds, and one count of Discharging a Firearm in an Occupied Dwelling.

Maye was granted a public defender after he told the judge he was unemployed and was supported by his parents financially.

The hearing lasted only minutes, but started 20 minutes late because the judge was stuck in traffic on I-664.

Police say Maye, a former student at Hampton University, allegedly followed a pizza delivery man into Harkness Hall early Sunday morning and opened fire. Maye is accused of shooting a night dormitory manager and the pizza delivery man several times, before turning the gun on himself.

The security guard has been released from the hospital, while the delivery driver is still recovering.

Maye is currently being held in the Hampton City Jail. When he was released from the hospital Wednesday, police were waiting at the door.

WAVY.com has learned Hampton Police are looking into Odane Maye's medical and mental history.

According to search warrants obtained by WAVY.com Thursday, detectives requested "any and all documents and handwritten notes related to mental health treatment, counseling, medications prescribed, and medical records" from the Riverside Behavioral Health Center on Executive Drive in the city.

On a separate warrant, detectives asked for handwritten notes, academic and advisement records, medical & financial records of Maye's from Hampton University where Maye was previously a student before he withdrew.

Police spokesperson Cpl. Paula Ensley said Thursday investigators still have not determined a motive in the campus shooting.
